What would cause the need for Probate? 

If you or your loved one does not have a Living Trust, the estate will have to be put through probate if your estate exceeds $166,250 (including your home).  Even if you have a Will your estate will have to go through the Probate process.

Probate is the formal legal process that gives recognition to a Will and appoints the executor or personal representative who will administer the estate and distribute assets to the intended beneficiaries.

What are the disadvantages to Probate?  

The disadvantages of probating a Will are many. The probate process is expensive, time consuming, and intrusive. Court costs, attorney fees, personal representative fees, bonds, and accounting fees all add up.
